Video of Obama's Speech to Students

U.S. President Barack Obama gave his rah, rah type speech to students today. While there has been controversy over his speech, with conservatives forgetting how their hero Ronald Reagan met with students during his term, Obama did nothing to "indoctrinate" students, but rather encouraged them to work hard.

Additionally, a number of conservative pundits have spoken up in support of Barack Obama's speech to students in the last few days, including Newt Gingrich, Laura Bush, and Rudy Giuliani.

Obama met with a group of approximately 40 students at the library of Wakefield High School in Arlington, VA, prior to the controversial nationwide speech. His motorcade across the Potomac River was greeted by a small band of protesters. One carried a sign more deserved by a sex offender than the President of the United States: "Mr. President, stay away from our kids."

During his meeting, one young person asked why the country doesn't have universal health insurance. "I think we need it. I think we can do it," Obama replied. This question shows that despite what conservatives may think, children are on top of the news and know what's morally important.

Laura Bush Defends Obama's Speech to Students

A voice of reason from the right harkened forth on Monday, joining the voices of Rudy Guiliani and Newt Gingrich. Laura Bush, yes that Laura Bush, defended Barack Obama's speech to students.

The former first lady said to CNN on Monday that it is "really important for everyone to respect the President of the United States."
"I think that there is a place for the President of the United States to talk to school children and encourage school children, and I think there are a lot of people that should do the same. And that is encourage their own children to stay in school and to study hard and to try to achieve the dream that they have."
When asked if she felt it was right to criticize Obama, as some have, by labeling him a socialist, she added:
"I'd have no idea whether it's fair, do you think I thought it was fair when President Bush was criticized — not really. So, I guess not."
Laura Bush also commented that she felt both Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama have done good jobs, but as far as George W. Bush saying anything for or against the pair:
"He thinks the president deserves the respect and the no second-guessing on the part of the former president… he didn't like it when he was criticized by former presidents and that's what he has chosen to do."
