Adulterer Stoned to Death in Somalia

A Somalian man has been stoned to death after being convicted of adultery. His pregnant girlfriend has been spared. However, that mercy will only last until she gives birth.

Abas Hussein Abdirahman, 33, was stoned to death in front of a crowd of some 300 people in the Southern port town of Merka. Southern Somalia is mostly run by Islamist groups.

The stoning reportedly was conducted by the al-Shabab group. President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed accused al-Shabab of marring the image of Islam by killing people as well as their treatment of women.
"Their actions have nothing to do with Islam. They are forcing women to wear very heavy clothes, saying they want them to properly cover their bodies but we know they have economic interests behind - they sell these kinds of clothes and want to force people to buy them."
This isn't an unusual event in Somalis. A 13-year-old girl was stoned to death for adultery in the southern town of Kismayo last year. Last month, two men were stoned to death in the same town after being accused of spying.
