Sesame Street to Celebrate 40 Years of Family TV

Google's Doodle today celebrates both the Sesame Street Anniversary which will occur on Nov. 10th, when its 40th season begins. It's also a celebration of Big Bird's birthday, although in terms of his Sesame Street age, he's effectively frozen at six years old.

Google marked the Sesame Street Anniversary and Big Bird's Birthday in its typical way. That is to say, it changed the Doodle (logo) on its home page to be representative of the event. Past such Doodles included celebrations of H.G. Wells' birthday (which was a rather mysterious series of Doodles).

While Big Bird's Birthday really means nothing, as he's frozen in age, the actor inside the costume is not so fortunate. Caroll Spinney has reached the ripe old age of 75, and others have been trained to take over as big bird later. For his Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch work, Spinney has received both a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1994) and the Library of Congress's Living Legend award (2000).

The November 10th season premiere will also be a Sesame Street anniversary show, with cameos from a number of people, including First Lady Michelle Obama. Expect a long parade of celebrity cameos on that episode.
